General Lamine Cissé Women, Peace and Security Research Fellowship 2020 for young African women ($USD 3,000 Grant)

April 19, 2020 will mark the first anniversary of the death of General Lamine Cissé, a renowned figure in West Africa and internationally for his commitment and achievements in the pursuit of peace and security, particularly in Senegal and elsewhere in Africa.

In honor of General Cissé, PartnersGlobal, Partners West Africa Nigeria and Partners West Africa Senegal are awarding research fellowships to two young African women researchers and practitioners working in the civil society and security sectors. Each fellow will receive a grant equivalent of 1,500,000 CFA (West African franc) to fund innovative research around the prevention and peaceful resolution of conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa with a central focus on women, peace and security.

Held in collaboration with Senegal’s Ministry of Armed Forces with the support of the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF) and the Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) respectively, these events will be structured around three main components:
1- A recognition and testimony ceremony;
2- A symposium on the theme “Integrity, ethics and good governance for peace and security”.
3- An exhibition on General Lamine Cissé’s career.

PartnersGlobal and Partners West Africa – Nigeria (PWA-N) will partner with Partners West Africa – Senegal (PWA-S) in holding the symposium on “Integrity, Ethics and Good Governance for Peace and Security” through the creation of two Excellence Fellowships for targeting young African women researchers (doctoral students or young doctors) and practitioners working in the field of development/civil society.

The fellow will receive a grant equivalent of 1,500,000 CFA (West African franc) to fund her research project. fellowship. Please note that the theme of the research fellowships is: “Women, Peace & Security”.

Requirements

Only future or ongoing research projects are eligible for the Fellowship. The selection
criteria applied for the project appraisal are:

  1. Applicant’s capacity to carry out quality research (level of education, professional experience, published work, academic support);
  2. Relevance and originality of the issue in relation to current security and gender issues;
  3. Link to the themes selected for the Fellowship, as specified in Article 3;
  4. Methodology and structuring of the work;
  5. Analytical development of the project narrative and the planned fieldwork;
  6. Interest of the results and the practical impact of contributions.

Conditions

The Fellowships are intended for the following:

  • For the First Fellowship: preferentially to women in Defense and Security Forces who wish to pursue their doctoral studies, or are enrolled in a Master’s degree, whose work focuses on African contexts and is related to “Women, Peace and Security”; or who, as part of their professional activities want to explore a field of analysis or research to inform national and institutional defense and security force policies.
  • For the Second Fellowship: to African Masters or doctoral students or young researchers (who defended their doctoral thesis less than 3 years ago), whose work focuses on African contexts and/or is related to “Women, Peace and Security”; or to practitioners working in the field of development and civil society who have a research/analysis theme related to Women, Peace and Security to inform institutional and national policies.

Fellowships

Both Fellowships are worth three thousand US dollars (US $3,000) or one million five hundred thousand CFA francs (CFA F 1,500,000) each.

In addition to the Fellowship, the research project will be publicized by the organizers of the “GENERAL LAMINE CISSE” DAYS and the Partners Network, which is financing the prize. Selected applicants will work in collaboration with the Partners Network (PartnersGlobal, PWA-S, and PWA-N). If necessary, to support the research project, the winner could be admitted to one of the Partners Network Centers in Senegal or Nigeria for a six-month internship.
